In this important book, one of Latin America's foremost critical
theorists examines the use and abuse of memory in the wake of the
social and political trauma of Pinochet's Chile. Focusing on the
period 1990-2015, Nelly Richard denounces the politics and
aesthetics of forgetting that have underpinned both the protracted
transition out of dictatorship and the denial of justice to its
survivors and victims. What are the perils and social costs of a
culture of forgetting? What forms do memories of injustice take in
newly formed democracies? How might a history of violence and an
ethics of reparation be reconciled in post-autocratic societies? In
addressing these and other questions, Richard exposes the abuses of
the past and the present while also attending to the residues of
memory that are manifested in street protests, literature, and the
media, and in artistic practices from architecture and urban design
to installation and film. While cultural artifacts can be powerful
devices for resistance and critique, Richard argues that they can
also be complicit in reproducing and collaborating with forms of
institutional and political oblivion. Both within Chile and beyond,
Richard offers a trenchant critique of how authoritarian regimes
and neoliberal states whittle away at memory's critical capacity.
At a time of seismic political realignments in Latin America and
internationally, Eruptions of Memory makes a powerful case for the
ethical, political, and aesthetic value of memory.

Blood Wedding. Concerned with love that cannot become marriage
among the primitive hill people of Castile, this is a play of the
workings of tremendous passions and tribal ritual toward an
inescapable tragic end. Yerma. “The whole tragic burden of Yerma
is measured by the deepening of her struggle with the problem of
frustrated motherhood.†—From GarcÃa Lorca, by Edwin Honig.
The House of Bernarda Alba. Again about “women whom love moves to
tragedy,†Bernarda Alba tells of the repression of five daughters
by a domineering mother, of how their natural spirits circumvent
her but bring violence and death.
This text is contributed by well-known researchers in the field and
serves as an important resource to provide scholars with up-to-date
research on sexual victimization. The book approaches the concept
through three separate sections Section I: Chapters 1 through 4
will address how the criminal justice system handles sexual
victimization Section II: Chapters 5 through 9 will address the
association between individuals in a relationship and sexual
assault. Section III: Chapters 10 through 13 will address unusual
and special issues associated with contemporary sexual
victimization. This approach offers students and scholars a
comprehensive examination of the sexual victimization issues and
challenges currently facing the criminal justice system in the past
and today. By discussing these issues, the theoretical explanations
for these crimes and the effectiveness of the policy that has been
applied will effectively link the criminological areas of theory,
research and policy. At the end of each chapter several discussion
questions will be provided. These questions could be assigned as
homework for students or used for in-class discussions of the
readings
For decades, casino gaming has been steadily increasing in
popularity worldwide. Blackjack is among the most popular of the
casino table games, one where astute choices of playing strategy
can create an advantage for the player. RISK AND REWARD analyzes
the game in depth, pinpointing not just its optimal strategies but
also its financial performance, in terms of both expected cash flow
and associated risk. The book begins by describing the strategies
and their performance in a clear, straightforward style. The
presentation is self-contained, non-mathematical, and accessible to
readers at all levels of playing skill, from the novice to the
blackjack expert. Careful attention is also given to simplified,
but still nearly optimal strategies that are easier to use in a
casino. Unlike other books in the literature the author then
derives each aspect of the strategy mathematically, to justify its
claim to optimality. The derivations mostly use algebra and
calculus, although some require more advanced analysis detailed in
supporting appendices. For easy comprehension, formulae are
translated into tables and graphs through extensive computation.
This book will appeal to everyone interested in blackjack: those
with mathematical training intrigued by its application to this
popular game as well as all players seeking to improve their
performance.

At the time of a paralyzing drought in the West we discover a
girl whose father and two brothers are worried as much about her
becoming an old maid as they are about their dying cattle. For the
truth is, she is indeed a plain girl. The brothers try every
possible scheme to marry her off, but without success. Nor is there
any sign of relief from the dry heat. When suddenly from out of
nowhere appears a picaresque character with a mellifluous tongue
and the most grandiose notions a man could imagine. He claims to be
a rainmaker. And he promises to bring rain, for $100. It's a silly
idea, but the rainmaker is so refreshing and ingratiating that the
family finally consent. Forthwith they begin banging on big brass
drums to rattle the sky; while the rainmaker turns his magic on the
girl, and persuades her that she has a very real beauty of her own.
And she believes it, just as her father believes the fellow can
actually bring rain. And rain does come, and so does love. An
excellent play for all groups.
